SKILL.md Generator

Say what your skill does and get a valid name, a description checked against the rules, and the SKILL.md file to drop into its folder. The name is checked against the published rules and against Anthropic's public skills; the file downloads only when it will load. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Save it as name/SKILL.md: the folder has the skill's name.

The Rules a Skill Name Has to Follow

The download button stays off until the name and description pass every rule, so the file you save always loads.

      How to Name a Skill

Anthropic's authoring guide suggests the gerund form, a verb ending in -ing: processing-pdfs, analyzing-spreadsheets, writing-documentation. An action (process-pdfs) or a noun phrase (pdf-processing) also works; vague names such as helper, utils or tools do not, because the agent picks a skill from a list by its name and description. Keep one pattern across all your skills. Write the description in the third person: "Extracts text from PDFs", not "I can extract text".

Names Already Used by Anthropic's Public Skills

The name check compares your name with the skills in Anthropic's public skills repository, read from GitHub when the page opens. If GitHub does not answer, it uses this list from October 19, 2026:

No public index lists every skill people have written, so a name can be free here and still be in use somewhere else.

      FAQ

      What is a SKILL.md file?

It is the file that defines an Agent Skill: a folder of instructions, scripts and resources an AI agent loads when a task needs it. The file starts with YAML frontmatter holding the skill's name and description, followed by Markdown instructions.

What is a valid skill name?

One to 64 characters of lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, not starting or ending with a hyphen, with no two hyphens in a row, and the same as the skill's folder name. Skills for Claude also cannot contain the words anthropic or claude.

How long can a skill description be?

Up to 1,024 characters. It should say what the skill does and when to use it, written in the third person, because the agent reads it to decide whether to load the skill.

Where do I put the file?

In a folder with the skill's name. For Claude Code that folder goes in ~/.claude/skills/ for yourself or .claude/skills/ for a project; on claude.ai you upload the folder as a zip in Settings.

Is what I type sent anywhere?

No. The name check runs in your browser against a list of public skill names, and the file is built and downloaded on your device.
