How to Give ChatGPT and Gemini a Custom Name

As announced by OpenAI on November 6, 2023, custom GPTs let you build your own version of ChatGPT with its own name and instructions; as announced by Google at I/O on May 14, 2024, Gems do the same in Gemini. Neither app lets you rename the assistant itself, but a named GPT or Gem is the closest thing, and it is the name you see every time you open it.

Name a custom GPT in ChatGPT

  1. Go to chatgpt.com/gpts and press Create.
  2. Open the Configure tab.
  3. Type the name in the Name field, then add a description and instructions.
  4. Save it. The name appears in your sidebar and at the top of every chat with that GPT.

Creating GPTs depends on your ChatGPT plan; if Create is missing, your plan may not include it.

Name a Gem in Gemini

  1. Go to gemini.google.com and open the sidebar.
  2. Choose Gems. The first time, it may sit under Settings and help.
  3. Press New Gem and enter a name and instructions.
  4. Press Save.

What a name does not change

There is no setting that renames ChatGPT or Gemini themselves. You can write in your instructions what you would like the assistant to call itself, but that is an instruction, not a rename: the app still says ChatGPT or Gemini, and the wake phrase on a phone or speaker does not change.

Choose the name

A GPT or Gem is usually named for its job or its persona. A role name (Editor, Coach) says what it does; an invented name feels like a character. The AI agent name generator makes both, and the AI agent persona card turns a name, a role and three vibe words into text you can paste into the instructions.
