City Name Generator

Generate city names for fantasy stories, tabletop games, and worldbuilding. Every result is a real place-name form — a coined base fused with a genuine toponymic ending (Gasobeck, Lartaford), a whole settlement type shown with a space (Trilko Reach, Gleat Falls), or a curated ready-made name (Alderwick, Brackenford, Valebourne). Bases are always four letters or more, so you never get a two-letter stub, and every name is screened for pronounceability.

    3. Generate as many times as you need — names do not repeat within a session.

What Makes These City Names Distinctive

Names come in three real place-name forms. Most fuse a coined base with a genuine toponymic ending — -ford, -wick, -mere, -ton, -ham, -worth, -bourne, -stead, and more — the suffix convention behind real towns like Bradford, Alnwick, and Windermere. The base is always four letters or more (five when it would otherwise jam against the ending), so you never get the two-letter stubs — "Zi District", "Xeport" — that weaker generators produce.

The other two forms are a whole settlement type shown with a space (Reach, Falls, Harbor, Heights) and a curated ready-made name that bypasses random fusion. Street and district words — Avenue, Plaza, Station, Terminal, Quarter — are deliberately left out, since those name a neighborhood, not a city. Every result is also checked so it doesn't land on a major real-world city or a well-known fictional one.

Unlike this site's other fantasy generators, city names carry no gender — a settlement doesn't have one — so this page is just a single Generate button, no style or gender controls to configure.

    FAQ

How does the city name generator work?

It builds names three ways, all real place-name forms. Most are a coined base fused with a genuine toponymic ending — -ford, -wick, -mere, -ton, -ham, -worth and more, the pattern behind real towns like Bradford and Alnwick — on a base of at least four letters so you never get a two-letter stub. Some are a whole settlement type shown with a space (Harbor, Falls, Reach). A few are curated ready-made city names. Every result is screened for pronounceability first.

What kind of names does this city name generator produce?

Fictional place names that read as real settlements — curated ready-made names like Alderwick, Brackenford, and Valebourne, coined fused forms like Gasobeck and Lartaford, and spaced settlement types like Trilko Reach and Gleat Falls. There is no gender or first/last-name shape, since a place name doesn't carry gender.

Can I use these names for my story, game, or map?

Yes. Generated names are creative suggestions for personal and commercial projects. Results are checked so they don't reproduce a major real-world city or a well-known fictional one, but that list isn't exhaustive — always verify a name against trademarks and local place names before using it in published or commercial content.

    Are my favorites saved anywhere?

Starred names are stored in your browser's localStorage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded to a server and no account or sign-up is needed.

Creative suggestions only: Generated names are intended as inspiration for fiction, games, and worldbuilding. Results are screened against a list of major real-world and well-known fictional cities, but that check is not exhaustive and does not cover trademarks, smaller place names, or domain availability. Verify a name before using it in a published or commercial work.
