How to Name a Home Robot
A home robot is spoken to across a room, by everyone in the house, with the television on. Its name has to work as a call before it works as a personality. This guide covers the sounds that carry, the names to keep out of the house, how to test a name before it sticks, and what to do when the robot comes with a wake word of its own.
A name it can hear across the room
Two or three syllables carry best: long enough that the robot does not wake on every short word, short enough to call out. Clear consonants at the start help, such as K, T, B or P, and so do open vowels. Kovi, Tobu and Bexa are easier to catch over a running tap than Ellis or Wren. Say the name loudly from another room before you settle on it.
Names to keep out of the house
- Anyone else's name in the home, a pet's included, and anything that rhymes with one. "Milo, stop" should never start the robot.
- Common words you say all day, such as Sunny or Cookie, and names that sound like them.
- Other assistants' wake words. A robot called Lexa in a house with an Alexa speaker will answer for both. The list of names already taken covers the common ones.
- Famous film robots. They belong to someone's story, and every guest will make the same joke.
Friendly, not menacing
A machine that walks or rolls around children and pets reads differently from a voice in a speaker. Hard, military or villain-sounding names make it feel colder than it is. A soft coinage, a nature word or a short warm name does the opposite. If children will use the robot, let them pick from a short list you have already tested.
When the robot has its own wake word
Many robots and speakers only listen for a fixed wake word, or let you pick from a short list. You can still give it a household name: it is what the family calls the robot, what goes on its app profile and what the children draw. Check the robot's settings for a wake word option before you print a name tag.
Test it for a week
Use the name for a week before it becomes permanent. Count the false wakes from the radio and from conversation, and notice whether everyone in the house actually says it. The AI agent name generator has a Robot mode for home robots. Under Assistants already in your home, tick the speakers you own and type the names of the people and pets in the house: names that open on the same sound or rhyme with any of them are left out.
