How to Use This Last Name Generator

1. Pick an origin or leave it on Any. If you are writing a character with Spanish heritage, select Spanish. If you want a mixed international cast, leave the selector on Any to draw from all nine origin pools at once.
2. Hit Generate. You get a fresh batch of 8 real surnames from the selected origin, with no repeated entries within the batch.
3. Copy a single name. Each result has a Copy button — click it to copy just that surname to your clipboard.
4. Save favorites. Click ⭐ Favorite to pin a surname to your Idea Library. Favorites are stored in your browser and stay there across sessions.
5. Generate again freely. The pool is large enough that you will rarely see the same name twice in a session, especially on Any origin.
6. Pair with a first name separately. This generator produces last names only. For a complete character name, use the Fantasy Name Generator (which includes a Full Name mode) or the Name Combiner to blend two existing names.

Surname Generator — How It Works

This surname generator draws from a hand-curated dataset of real, common family names grouped into nine origin pools — English, Irish/Scottish, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Scandinavian, Japanese, and Polish — with roughly 40–50 surnames per origin and 400+ total. Every surname in the dataset is a real family name widely used in its respective country or cultural tradition.

When you select an origin, the generator samples exclusively from that pool and deduplicates within each batch so you never see the same surname twice in one run. Selecting Any origin merges all nine pools before sampling, giving you a globally diverse batch in a single click.

Names with diacritics (García, Müller, Sørensen, Wiśniewski) are preserved in their correct spelling — copy them directly into your story, game, or document.

Last Names by Origin — What to Expect

Each origin produces a distinct register of surnames that carries cultural and regional texture to your characters or placeholder data:

English surnames (Smith, Taylor, Walker) are often occupational or descriptive in origin. Irish/Scottish surnames (Murphy, MacDonald, Fraser) reflect Gaelic and clan traditions, with many beginning with O', Mac, or Mc. Spanish surnames (García, Martínez, González) follow a strong patronymic tradition and often end in -ez. Italian surnames (Rossi, Ferrari, Esposito) are often tied to physical characteristics, occupations, or regions. German surnames (Müller, Schmidt, Becker) are frequently occupational and often contain umlauts. French surnames (Dubois, Leroy, Fontaine) are commonly derived from geography or nature. Scandinavian surnames (Andersen, Johansson, Larsson) follow a clear -sen/-son patronymic pattern. Japanese surnames (Sato, Suzuki, Tanaka) are typically two kanji in their native form, here rendered in the standard Hepburn romanization. Polish surnames (Nowak, Kowalski, Wiśniewski) feature distinctive consonant clusters and diacritics such as ś, ń, and ż.
