How Each Designation Is Built
- Unit code: a two-letter prefix and a number, like HX-817 or SY-4B. Robots, androids and drones each have their own short list of prefixes, picked by hand to stay clear of words. An AI gets a system word instead: Node 412, Shard 70, Core K-4.
- Serial name: one word chosen for the kind (tools and fittings for robots, given names for androids, birds and weather for drones, records and reasoning for AIs) with a number or a Mark from II to VII: Rivet-9, Calla Mk III, Petrel 37.
- Call sign: two plain words for a robot, an android or an AI, like Steady Lantern. A drone gets a bird or a weather word with its flight and position, the way squadrons call aircraft: Petrel 2-1.
- Model line: a line word with a hundreds series (Caliper 300) or a series number (Caliper Series 4). A letter and a number after the word is left out, because it reads as a weapon or aircraft code.
- Numbers left out: 14, 17, 18, 47, 55, 67, 69, 88, 99, 100, 187, 420, 455, 516, 666, 717, 731, 911. They carry hate-group, slang or joke readings, read as words in numbers, name wartime units, or are already worn by famous characters.
- Famous machines: no designation equals, or contains as a word, one of the 343 designations and names on our list of well-known robots, androids, drones and AIs from films, series, games and real products, and of famous aircraft, weapon, engine and chip codes and wartime units (R2-D2, HAL 9000, T-800, MQ-9, F-16, AK-47, Atlas and Siri among them), read October 20, 2026. A hyphen makes no difference: B2 and B-2 count as one. Every designation the rules can make, 48,038 in all, also passes the screens every Nameryn generator uses for offensive words, profanity, brands and famous names.
- One batch, no repeats: a batch never uses the same prefix, opening word or number twice, and a designation you have already seen comes back only once that form has run out of new ones.

FAQ
What is a machine designation?
The name a machine is filed under rather than called by: a unit code like HX-817, a serial name like Rivet-9 or Calla Mk III, a call sign like Petrel 2-1, or a model line like Caliper 300. Stories use them for robots, androids and AIs; drone squadrons and factories use them for real.
How do I name a robot or an android character?
Pick the kind and the form above and press the button. A code or serial sounds like paperwork, which suits a machine the story treats as equipment; a call sign or a given name with a number suits one the crew has started to treat as a person. Many stories use both: the designation first, the nickname later.
Are these designations already taken?
None equals, or contains as a word, a designation worn by a well-known fictional or real robot, android, drone or AI on our list, and every one passes the same screens as the other generators. Real machines and stories are countless, so search the one you pick before you print it on anything.
Can I use these designations?
Yes, they are free for stories, games, props, robots and projects.
Is the designation I save sent anywhere?
No. The designations are made in your browser from a list that loads with the page, and favorites stay in your browser.
