Companion Robots Compared

Eight robots made to keep someone company, from a desk pet to a robot for an older parent: what each costs, any subscription, what five years of owning it comes to, where its maker sells it and what to call it. Every cell comes from the maker's own page or announcement, dated; where the maker does not say, the cell says so.

What to Call It

Moflin is the one these makers let you name in their app. EMO wakes to "Hey Emo!" and Loona to "Hello Loona". If yours takes a name, the robot name generator has a robot pet mode whose names fit aibo's 1 to 20 characters, and the wake word checker tells you whether a name can be said across a room.

FAQ

How much does a companion robot cost over five years?

From $159.99 for a Joy for All cat, which needs no subscription, to $3,249.39 for ElliQ: its $249.99 enrollment fee and sixty months at $49.99 on the annual plan. EMO, Loona and Moflin cost their purchase price over five years, as their makers name no subscription. Jennie, Home LEO and Mobo have no published price.

Which companion robots need a subscription?

ElliQ: it is sold only as a subscription that includes a lease of the device while it is paid. The makers of EMO, Loona and Moflin name no subscription on the pages we read, and Joy for All's product pages mention none.

Can I buy Tombot's Jennie?

Not yet. Tombot says it sold out its first litter, runs a waitlist, and will give pricing and availability when it gets closer to shipping.

Where can I buy Loona outside the United States?

KEYi lists the US, the UK, Germany, the European Union, Canada, Australia and Singapore as its common delivery regions. Casio sells Moflin in its US, UK and Japan stores, and Living AI says it delivers EMO across the world.

Can I give my companion robot a name?

Moflin, yes: Casio's MofLife app includes naming it. EMO answers to "Hey Emo!" and the other makers' pages we read do not say whether you can rename their robots. The robot name generator has a robot pet mode with names that fit aibo's limits.

About the Amazon buttons: “See it on Amazon”, on the robots Amazon US sells, is an affiliate link marked “affiliate”, so Nameryn may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes what the tables say, and every price here is read on the maker's own page, not Amazon's. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
